The Musicals of Rogers and Hammerstein
Composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II had each enjoyed long and successful careers before they teamed up for a collaboration that changed musical theater forever. With bright golden hazes on meadows and mountains begging to be climbed, they created eleven musicals – for Broadway, Hollywood and network television – and eight remain worldwide favorites.
In this course, we will watch performance videos of their work – some familiar, some rare – and discuss their classics, emphasizing their lasting hits.
Although we will not use a textbook, you might enjoy Todd Purdum’s Something Wonderful: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Broadway Revolution.
